Australian Studies

The Faculty of Arts offers an interdepartmental program in Australian Studies housed in the Australian Centre and the Department of History. Defining Australia and Australians has been a major preoccupation of our culture. The Australian Studies program allows students to integrate analyses of Australian culture and society from across disciplines and to apply different methodological and theoretical approaches to the ways in which ideas of identity and tradition have been communicated.

More detailed information can be obtained from the University handbook.

The Australian Studies program commences at first year and there are no prerequisites for entry at this level. Students may also enter at second year after the completion of 25 points at first year in subjects which focus on Australia.

The Australian Centre also runs an Independent Study Project for the College of the Holy Cross, USA.

Study Abroad students from the College of the Holy Cross (Worcester, Mass.) undertake their compulsory work requirement, the Independent Study Project, through the auspices of The Australian Centre. The ISP is designed to give Holy Cross students the opportunity to engage in research which will enhance their understanding of Australian society and culture through direct participation in the wider community. In most circumstances, the ISP will be completed in conjunction with the undergraduate subject, Australia Now. The Australian Centre provides support and guidance to Holy Cross students by providing a program co-ordinator and individual supervision. Students are invited to take a creative and personal approach to the writing of their ISP, and multimedia presentations are encouraged.
