Monumental Queensland:
Signposts on a Cultural Landscape
- Lisanne Gibson
and Joanna Besley (2004)
Published by University of Queensland Press and sponsored by
the Public Art Agency; the University of Melbourne; the Australian
Academy of the Humanities; the Environmental Protection Agency;
and, the University of Queensland.
From Queen Victoria to King Wally, the Weeping Mother to the
Cactoblastis moth, the Big Pineapple to Australia's Big
Foot, Monumental Queensland provides an eccentric review of the
monuments, memorials, public artworks and big things that are
peculiar to Queensland.
Authors Lisanne Gibson and Joanna Besley have selected over 200
of Queensland's diverse public cultural objects and placed
them, for the first time, along a continuum. Some old, some new.
Some familiar, some forgotten. Some lost forever. These signposts
on a cultural landscape provide a unique guide to Queensland's
studies and histories.
Monumental Queensland encourages us - whoever and wherever
we are - to look closely at the things around us and how
they articulate our identity.
