School of Historical Studies The Australian Centre

Australian Centre Research Facilities

The Australian Centre offers researchers a relaxed and friendly atmosphere as well as a variety of resources. Facilities include both IBM and Macintosh computers, a laser printer and a telephone for study-related purposes. A kitchen is also available. The Centre is open during regular office hours. Special access can be organised through the Centre Administration Staff.

Seminars

The Australian Centre hosts a regular series of seminars aimed at providing an informal, supportive and constructive intellectual environment for researchers to present their work and exchange research and theoretical concerns. For further information, see the Australian Centre seminars page.

Libraries

The Australian Centre has a small but rich collection of reference material that is contained in two collections.

The Chris Wallace-Crabbe Library
The Chris Wallace-Crabbe Library, housed in Building A, Room 211, contains a range of poetry, fiction, biography and non-fiction. The Centre also houses a substantial collection of Australian journals and magazines. While the library is open to researchers and postgraduate students for browsing purposes, there are no provisions for borrowing.

The Davies Collection
Professor Alan Davies was appointed to a lectureship at the University of Melbourne in 1946, and became Professor of Political Science from 1968 until his premature death in 1987. Mr Stephen Davies generously donated his father's library to the Centre in 1991. The collection comprises over 2,000 books and periodicals in the fields of politics, sociology, psychology and psychotherapy, and reflects his professional interest in dream interpretation.

Photocopying
Researchers have access to a PIN-operated photocopier, and are given an allowance of 200 free copies. Additional copying may be available in special circumstances.

Postage
Study-related mail may be sent from the Centre Office.
