Supervisors

All PhD and MA students are allocated a Principal and an Associate Supervisor. In some cases, such as joint supervision with another department, two equal Co-supervisors may be appointed.

Principal and Associate Supervisors are allocated at the time of approval of an application for a place in the postgraduate research program. It is not the responsibility of prospective students to find a supervisor, but prospective students are encouraged to contact staff to explore their availability and expertise to supervise the thesis project.

The role of the supervisor

(See also the useful Faculty of Arts guidelines under Supervision)

Principal supervisor

The Principal Supervisor is the primary source of guidance and advice for the candidate and the main point of reference for the University on matters such as progress reports and applications for leave. The Principal Supervisor is also the main person to whom the Director of the Centre refers for advice on examination matters.

It is recommended you meet with your supervisor on average half an hour every 2 weeks (full-time candidates) and every 4 weeks (part-time candidates). Records of these meetings should be kept by your supervisor and retained on your file.

Associate Supervisor

The Associate Supervisor provides support for the relationship between Principal Supervisor and candidate. They do not substitute for, nor seek to duplicate this primary relationship. While individual practice varies, the expectations of Associate Supervisors would normally be:

• involvement in the Induction Review (and in subsequent Progress Reviews) to provide additional advice and guidance; they will read and comment on draft chapters provided for progress reviews;
• Associate Supervisors do not normally attend supervisory meetings; however, by agreement, the Associate Supervisor may take over supervision if the Principal Supervisor is on extended leave such as research leave;
• Associate Supervisors will normally read a full draft of the thesis when the Principal Supervisor deems it ready for a final reworking prior to submission. Normally, this is at the time of the Faculty 2.5 year Review. The Associate Supervisor’s written comments are directed to assisting the candidate to improve the draft;
• Associate Supervisors should not be regarded as "thesis umpires", reconciling problems that might arise between the candidate and Principal Supervisor. Should such problems arise, they should be referred in the first instance to the Postgraduate Coordinator.

Co-Supervisors

In some cases, for example where a project is supervised jointly with another department, two equal co-supervisors may be appointed. Normally, this will only be the case where the student is jointly enrolled in the two departments. Both co-supervisors would normally attend supervision meetings, read drafts of chapters and advise on issues of project planning.
