Australian Studies Intensive Course

Tamagawa University (Japan)

 

Outline: The intensive academic course in Australian Studies covers two key themes; a migrant nation and indigenous studies. ESL classes and academic tutorials are incorporated into the program, and students prepare a presentation at the end of program. Students are provided a reader, workbook, and course certificate. This 3 week program in February includes a local homestay.

Housing: Melbourne homestay with meals provided.

Trips/excursions: City sights tour (1/2 day), Immigration museum, Sydney Rd excursion, Aboriginal Heritage Walk, Melbourne Museum - Bunjilaka, bush dancing.

The three day bush trip to the Grampians and local homestays promote cultural interaction and experiences.  This 3 week program in February and March includes a local homestay.

Enhanced Academic Program

Hwa Chong High School (Singapore)

 

Outline: This program exposes Hwa Chong students to a tertiary-level humanities experience and familiarizes them with the expectations of academic culture.  It introduces students to ‘Area Studies’ and develops skills to critically understand a country’s contemporary culture. Students are engaged with Indigenous Australia, British Australia, and multicultural Australia. Assessment includes a film review, workshop, open book exam, and independent research essay. This three day intensive program runs in March.

Housing: Student hostel/hotel

Independent Research Course – Reading Multicultural Melbourne

Villanova University (USA)

 

Outline: This academic course is intended to deepen Villanova students interaction with Australian society and cultivate reflection of their experiences abroad, including topics on urban Australia, Indigenous Australia, British Australia, multicultural Australia, and sports in Australia and America. Students are provided a reader and assessed with an oral presentation, report and essay.

Trips/excursions: Shrine of Remembrance, Immigration museum, Museum of Victoria, Melbourne art installations, Melbourne suburbs, AFL hall of fame.

Timetable: 7 weekly sessions over one semester at differing locations.

Independent Cultural Immersion Project

College of the Holy Cross (USA)

 

Outline: Enhance students understanding of Australian society and culture through direct participation in the wider community.  Students are supervised by a university academic and present a project to be assessed at the end of the year (written, visual presentation). Projects commonly relate to community service, internship or a personal passion. This program is designed for student groups currently enrolled at the University of Melbourne.

Timetable:  1 year duration, 4 seminars, 2 hours contact with supervisor.

IES Summer Program (USA)

 

Outline: The 6 week program in collaboration with IES Study Abroad is offered each July with a core subject in Australian politics and society, and one elective from a choice of 3 subjects. The 3 electives are local internship, Australia and the World, and Cross Cultural Currents. All subjects are assessed.

Housing: Serviced apartments in the University district.

Trips/excursions: Internship work experience, Sydney /Canberra trip (3 days), Central Australia trip (4 days), Bush trip – Grampians (4 days), Australian rules football night match, Birrarung river walk,

IES Semester program (USA)

 

Outline: This semester study abroad program is in collaboration with IES Study Abroad. Students are directly enrolled in full time undergraduate studies at the University of Melbourne, with access to all undergraduate facilities. International programs/IES staff provide full support to students including – accommodation arrangements, enrolment assistance ???, orientation program in the bush (4 days), mid-semester field trip to Tasmania (6 days), regular student check ins, student drop in centre, 24/7 emergency assistance, academic workshop,

Housing: Student apartments, college residency (meals provided), or self arranged.

Trips/excursions: Shrine of Remembrance, Australian Rules football game, Bush trip – Grampians (4 days), mid-semester field trip to Tasmania (6 days),
