Biography

Richard Trembath took up a post-doctoral fellowship at the Australian Centre in July 2005 to work with Dr Fay Anderson on the history of Australian war journalism from the Boer War to the current involvement in Iraq. This is an ARC funded project carried out in partnership with the CEW Bean foundation and the National Library of Australia. Currently, he is completing a history of the Brotherhood of St Laurence, one of Australia's most significant and pioneering voluntary welfare organisations.

Publications

In 2005, Australian Scholarly Publishing published A Different Sort of War, Richard's examination of Australia's role in the Korean War (1950-1953). This concentrates especially on the accounts of ordinary soldiers who volunteered for this conflict. It also investigates why the Korean War has been “forgotten” by many Australians despite its significance in the Cold War. Other articles Richard has published recently include the following: “The Greatness and Smallness of Their Story: Australian War Correspondents in the Twentieth Century', published in the collection, When Journalism Meets History, RMIT Publishing, 2004, 'A Lie Based on a Delusion: Australia's Role in the Korean War Germ Warfare Controversy', Social Alternatives, Volume 23, No. 3, 2004 and 'No line is followed: Peace Parsons and Australian Opposition to the Korean War (1950-1953)', published in the collection, God, the Devil and a Millennium of Christian Culture, RMIT Publishing, 2004.

Teaching

Richard has taught in a wide range of undergraduate subjects. Two of these have been popular subjects taught at the Australian Centre such as Australia Now and Australia and America, courses which have interested international students who want to compare Australian society with their own. Richard specialised in lecturing in subjects related to the Australian experience of war, not so much for the battles and the fighting as for understanding the ways in which it has affected our society. He has also taught in the history of sport and the history of medicine and disease.
