Biography
Dr Nathalie Nguyen holds an Australian Research Fellowship from the Australian Research Council 2005-2010 for her project Vietnamese Women: Voices and Narratives of the Diaspora. She is also the recipient of a 2007 Harold White Fellowship from the National Library of Australia.
Nathalie is a graduate of the Universities of Melbourne (BA Hons) and Oxford (DPhil). She was awarded the Professor Alan Rowland Chisholm Memorial Prize and the Dwight Final Examination Prize at Melbourne, and won a Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Award to do her doctorate at Oxford, where she specialized in Vietnamese Francophone literature. On returning to Australia, Nathalie taught French at the Universities of Adelaide and Newcastle before taking up her ARC Fellowship at Melbourne.
Research
Nathalie’s work focuses on women's written and oral narratives. It encompasses oral histories of Vietnamese women, as well as a comparative literary analysis of the published memoirs of Vietnamese women in the 4 major countries of resettlement in the West.
Her latest book is Memory Is Another Country: Women of the Vietnamese Diaspora (Praeger, 2009).
Nathalie's book Voyage of Hope: Vietnamese Australian Women’s Narratives (Common Ground Publishing, 2005) was shortlisted for the prestigious 2007 New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award in the Community Relations Commission Award category.
Her first book Vietnamese Voices: Gender and Cultural Identity in the Vietnamese Francophone Novel (Southeast Asia Publications, Northern Illinois University, 2003) was nominated for 4 international awards, including the MLA Aldo and Jeanne Scaglione Prize for French and Francophone Studies and the Kiriyama Prize.
